Getting the Copper Axe first
The large logs that drop Dark Wood need a Copper Axe, bought from Ridge at the Howling Hammer for 3 Copper Bars and 1,000 coins. Until then the logs sit there untouchable.
Where the large logs spawn
They spawn readily around your farm area, especially early on while you are still clearing the property. Weeping Willow Trees are a second documented source.
