Where the Wood comes from
Plain Wood drops from Pine, Ash, Beech, Plum, and Blue Willow trees, and from the small logs scattered around the map. Birch Trees give Light Wood instead, which the Furnace refuses for Charcoal.
Batch it early
Charcoal appears in most smelting recipes: every metal bar needs one, and Glass needs one too. IGN also documents Charcoal occasionally appearing when digging up glowing swirl spots. Burning a big batch whenever the Furnace is idle saves repeated trips.
